Stars in My Eyes

Two record players set to begin and play simultaneously. One record plays the song "Don't Let the Stars Get In Your Eyes" sung by Perry Como while the other counters with "I let the Stars Get in My Eyes" sung by Goldie Hill. Though each recording is at a different pace and musical style, the call and response of the competing lyrics is recognizable as a dialogue if listened to carefully. Both songs end at the same time leaving a few minutes of silence. Both songs were written by Slim Willet, the second composed as a response to the initial hit song.

Gold Leafed Weeds

Installation for Nuit Blanche in Victoria. Individual leaves were gold leafed and covered with a protective sealant. Installed in a public courtyard under a tree, among other weeds.

360 Degree Video: A Guided Tour of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria

By presenting a view of the gallery space from multiple angles, I devised a low-tech approach to a 360 degree view. In the project, I combine perceptual interests with a literal (anthropological) examination of the gallery site itself, using a documentary approach to filming.

A detailed tour of the building, its structure, history and contents, is led by the head of gallery security. The footage is recorded using a portable, homemade steady-cam and four cameras. Pointing in opposite directions, the cameras film and move simultaneously in one long continuous shot. Much like the approach of the early documentary-styled filmmakers (Kino-Pravda, Cinéma Vérité,) the project involves using hand-held or lightweight cameras and portable equipment that can follow a subject and move quickly through various environments. Exhibited as a split screen (quadrant.)

Miniature furniture made from foamcore and a glue gun. Concern with scale was largely ignored, though there was some effort at consistency. Exhibited both as three dimensional objects or as digital photographs.

The Wonderful World of Ants

"The Wonderful World of Ants" was shot with a high-8 camera and edited digitally. For the duration of two days, I filmed ants in my studio as they made their way across an invisible path, leading from the window sill, up the wall, and into the ceiling. I added pencil marks to trace their steps, and stepped back to see how closely they would follow the lines.

During the four hours of tape, new routes were developed, old routes erased, objects moved, and detours suggested. What unfolds visually is a cross between scientific analysis and adventurous imagining.

Series of about 30 paintings as part of an ongoing project. Concept inspired by illustrations from children's mystery novels such as the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew where intriguing events were taking place or an arrangement of objects or people indicted a mysterious significance. Background story and plot are lost without an actual book to accompany the images.

Installation of a small cluster of trees with an abandoned snowmobile nearby pointing in a direction leading away from them. Narrative missing key ingredients. Installed at Mercer Union as "Room of Miles and Feet" along with a video work in 2005.
